Disney Marathon

Things I learned from today’s marathon (as mediated through a Tylenol III medicated state):

1. Most obviously, I can finish a marathon;

2. Despite #1, or maybe just in knowing #1, I will likely not run another marathon for a long while to come;

3. When the brochure makes the race look fun and exciting, be suspicious; it’s a marathon, and it hurts; and as fun as the ads make it look, it will still crush your soul, your soles, your knees, and any other bony part of your body;

3b. Also, a great distance of the run took place outside the theme parks on the connective roads and back lots, none of which was too scenic, and a lot of which stunk like manure;

4. If I ever travel for another long race, I’m definitely staying the night after the race; running a long run and then immediately getting into a car was dumb and my body resents me now for the lack of post-run workout, let alone the lack of poolside time to soothe the muscles;

5. Travelers really love Disney (World and probably Land); so many different nationalities and languages in today’s run, and that was very cool;

5b. Orlando is full of tourists and driving anywhere around Disney is bat-shit crazy and time-consuming;

6. Running through and exiting Cinderella’s Castle was a picture-perfect moment, and they’ve really timed that race out well for the sunrise and the light of day to coordinate with that part of the run;

7. I’m excited for the pictures next week, and while I never buy running pictures, because let’s be honest, who looks nice running, I want to remember that I ran a marathon in the event that I ever forget this pain and register for another one;

8. The Gate River Run seems like complete cake now at a measly 15K and I’m excited for March 10, even if I can’t fathom walking 15K let alone running it;

9. I wish I could bend my legs right now so I could walk to my bedroom or the fridge for some water; and

10. Despite all the above, it really was a good trip, and I’m glad I was able to go with my roommate as he’s such a Disney fanatic and it was his birthday week and all.

Easily one weekend for the books.
